Avatars (avs) are pictures used in vp to represent you. To move your av, left click and drag. To change your avatar right click on yourself .. hit edit id .. hit personal .. hit change .. click on desired av .. hit ok .. hit ok again. Avatars are located at c:\programfiles\vplaces\exts\gallery . You can get avs from avatar sites (to save them right click on the one you want .. hit save picture or save target as .. browse to path above) or from other chatters (when you see the envelope come up hit save .. browse to above path)
Megas are larger versions of avatars. To get the megahead program go to http://fly.to/vpgoodies. You will need to download the mega program and the big av patch. Leave vp to install the patch. You use megas by hitting games at the top .. start a game .. megahead. You turn off the music and the announcer in the game by clicking on the drums and mic in the game tab once you've gone mega. (help with using megas can be found at http://go.to/vpworks ) To move a mega in the room, move your cursor over the extreme left side of it till you see "yourname's megabighead" .. hold down on mouse and move to desired space and let go. NOTE: In the new build 159, mega patch is built in to the tools/preferences feature of vp so just checkmark it.
Gestures are .vpa files. They are found by pushing the smiley face by the type bar. Your palette will come up .. click on desired gesture .. hit enter. Gestures can be obtained from sites on the web by downloading them, or from other chatters. When getting them off the web they are often in zip format, in which case you extract them to c:\ programfiles\vplaces\exts\gestures . When receiving them from another chatter, the envelope will come up.. hit save .. and normally gestures know where to go. Just double check to make sure they are going to the above path. You sometimes will have to "refresh" your palette when getting new gestures. Do this by opening palette and hitting F5. CAUTION : Be careful accepting files from other chatters. Some will send corrupted files which can boot you or contain virus. Make sure you trust your source and it's always a good idea to keep virus scan running in vp.
As you surf the rooms you will see many have music playing. You need Crescendo to hear these midi files. You can download Crescendo at http://www.liveupdate.com
You can send private messages to other chatters by either right click on their name or avatar and hit send message, or by locating them and hit send IM. If you "join" someones av you will have a tab for private chat also. (To join avs, move on the right side of the person you are joining, and drag your av till you see the little chat bubble come up and let go. You will then be connected and the private chat tab will appear at the bottom) Instant messages can be turned off by hitting Tools.. Preferences .. General Tab.. and check box associated with instant messages
To get someone's attention, right click on their avatar and hit alert. A sound will come thru their speakers.
On the bottom right is Locate button. Hit it ... type in the persons name (id) .. hit locate .. and check list for that person. If not sure, you can pull it up with just the first few letters. Don't forget any _-x or other characters before the name.
To transfer Avatars : right click the person you're sending to .. hit send file .. hit Avatar .. hit browse .. click on desired Av .. hit send. To transfer gestures : same as above, but hit Gesture instead of Avatar. To transfer a file from your computer : same as above, but click File instead of Avatar or Gesture.
To leave a room to go to Observe: click the mouth at the top left. To get back in room: click the eye in the same place. To go to another site: put the address (url) in the address window and hit enter. (you can cut and paste address in that window by highlighting the address .. right click on it .. hit copy .. then go to location window .. highlight .. right click .. hit paste) To save a site you like so you can go back, hit GO up above .. Favorites .. Add to Favorites. To get back to it, simply hit GO .. Favorites .. and click on desired site. You can also get a list of rooms by hitting Tools above .. hit quick menu. ANY web page can be a room. To enter a room thru observe rather than just pop in the room, click Tools .. Preferences .. General Tab .. and UNcheck the first box which says "enter room......"
To travel around vp in groups of 11 or 2, hit Guided Tours at the top, start a tour. You move around vp as you would alone. To change tours, hit Guided Tours and set up tour, then hit start tour. When on the tour tab, you can talk in a room without disturbing it as the room cannot see conversation. You can right click on yourself and hit start/end tour also. To join someone else's tour...just double click on it.
You can hit Private Room at top button, type in a room name of your choice, and give the same room name to a friend or friends to create your own private room to talk in without it being open to the public.
If you'd like to read a page without the avatars in the way...simply hit Avatars up top , and uncheck Show Avatars. If you hit the View button up top, you can change your view to regular browser to get the full page. When you are ready to come back to the VP appearance .. simply hit VP Classic under View.
On the General Tab in Tools .. Preferences, you can turn on and off accepting and sending of files , im's , gesture sounds, how to enter the room.
Take too long for your avs to load because you have too many? Go to c:\programfiles\vplaces\exts thru windows explorer or my computer .. make a new folder .. name it anything you like .. put avs in it . When you change avs in vp .. just hit the folder for the av you want on the right of the gallery. Need a new palette for too many gestures? Go to c:\programfiles\vplaces\exts .. make a new folder .. name it gestures1 .. when you come in vp , go to Tools .. preferences .. directories .. and add or take away "1" after the word gestures in the gesture directory space. You can make as many folders for each as you can keep up with.
You want to tag or paint your Av or make your own
You can crop and resize your regular avs to 48 x 64 pixels .gif format and save to gallery. Megas are 102 x 116. Tours are 144 x 64. Use your photo editor to work on these. If you don't have one you can go to www.jasc.com for a trial version of Paint Shop Pro which is very user friendly.
